Incredible Shrinking Products – Pure Leaf Edition

I love iced tea as much as the next guy. Other than water I usually only drink iced-tea. The Pepsi Company makes a tasty tea called Pure Leaf. Compared to the other popular brands of tea I personally think Pure Leaf is one of the best tasting around. Flavor variations are diverse and pretty much all enjoyable.

Iced Teas are expensive and Pure Leaf is no exception

If you shop around on Amazon or your local supermarket for a while, you will notice that the various sellers of Iced tea have cranked up the prices of their teas. Its not the price of the tea that gets me angry Its the deception that I hate.

Pure Leaf – Same bottle two different sizes.

Best stickers / labels for youth hockey score sheets!

I have been working with youth hockey teams for about 15 years now. Both my boys play ice hockey on multiple teams, and I have been volunteering as team manager for all of them. Part of the managers job is to keep score and supply rosters to the home and away score keeper. Its a huge pain to write in each players name on game day so I generally like to make a score sheet sticker.  It simplifies the process and makes the sheet nice and neat.

Which stickers labels work best?

We have a great example of a youth hockey score sheet above showing both teams using 2×4 stickers. From what I have seen there are many organizations using this format for paper score keeping. Continue reading “Best stickers / labels for youth hockey score sheets!”

Incredible Shrinking Product – Barbasol Shaving Cream

I’m not sure if anyone cares about this, I’m not sure if I even care about this however I guess I find it worth mentioning. I have been using Barbasol shaving cream since I hit puberty and it does the job its supposed to do. In fact my father used Barbasol shaving cream too. I would say he passed it on to me when I was learning how to shave so many years ago.

Welcome to corporate America, where profits are important and the incredible shrinking product is a reality of life.  I have seen this before where the toilet paper roll becomes thinner, or the NET Weight of a product is shaved down by 1/2 and ounce or so and the price stays the same. I understand its all economics. Reduce the amount of product in the box and increase your profits.

Automotive Headlight Technology – Even Edison Would be Impressed!

Recently I purchased a new car and was amazed at how much technology is packed into it. From radar cruise control and self steering, to blind spot monitoring and collision avoidance its great to see how far we have come since the advancement of the micro processor. One item that caught my eye is the fact their is not a single Edison light bulb in the  car. It is 100% LED technology even the Headlights!

I have been driving longer than I’m not driving, over 27 years (do the math, yes I’m old) My first car had “sealed” beam headlights and were sufficiently bright and focused for 1980’s technology. Just think, how much more have we advanced since the invention of the automobile?

A trip back in time:

In the late 1800’s as cars became more prevalent there was a need to light the road at night. Since the first commercial light bulb was invented around 1879 it was not feasible to install it into a vehicle. Early road vehicles used fueled lamps to light the way.  You had your choice of acetylene or oil and the Prest-O-Light company had a great storage and delivery system for the acetylene gas. memorial banner

Thank you to all the men and women that have given the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country safe. It it wasn’t for you we probably wouldn’t be here today and enjoy life in a safe peaceful country.

A few random facts about Memorial Day you may not have know.

When did we start celebrating Memorial Day?

WarterlooIt is unclear where and when this tradition started, many different communities around the county may have began their own independent gatherings. However, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York the official birthplace of Memorial Day!. This community first celebrated their version of Memorial day on May 5th 1866. Business closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags. Continue reading “Happy Memorial Day! A Few Random Facts.”

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

I just wanted to extend my wishes for a Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms celebrating today! Especially to my Wife, who works hard every day keeping our home running so well. It may not feel like it , but I hope you know we appreciate all you do every day. Not just on Mother’s Day.Happy Mother's Day

In case you were curious (from Wikipedia)

“In its present form, Mother’s Day was established by Anna Jarvis on May 9, 1905, with the help of Philadelphia merchant John Wanamaker. Ann Jarvis always claiming that the creation of Mother’s Day was hers alone.” -Wikipedia

“On May 10, 1913, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution calling on all federal government officials (from the president down) to wear a white carnation the following day in observance of Mother’s Day. On May 8, 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a law designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day and requesting a proclamation. The next day, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring the first national Mother’s Day as a day for American citizens to show the flag in honor of those mothers whose sons had died in war. In 1934, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved a stamp commemorating the holiday.” – Wikipedia

Welcome to Webcommand.net!

In the tradition of programmers of long ago I would like to say “HELLO WORLD” with my first official blog post on Webcommand.net.

I have big plans for this blog and would love if my readers (hopefully I can find some) would help drive the direction of my content. In my head I would like to feature articles that focus on the following content.

  • Computers and Networking – I am an IT professional by trade and have been around servers and workstations most of my life. I think I would focus on some “How To” pages or post some insight into some issues that I am facing at my day job.  Or even a few posts regarding my love of the raspberry pie!
  • Electronics – As a hobby I also like to dabble in electronics, maybe some insight on the latest gizmo? Or a how to build a circuit or project page. I enjoy working with LED’s and soldering. I also enjoy modding or “jail breaking” my devices and I’m sure a few how to posts will pop-up as well.
  • Up-Cycling – I have a creative side too. I have been running an Etsy store for over 10 years now. I try to take old discarded electronics and make them into cool up-cycled project for everyone to enjoy. I have always wanted to write an e-book on how I make my goodies and this blog is a good starting point. If you’re interested take a look at www.GeekGearStore.com
  • Deals and Bargains – I love a good deal, weather it be a great discount on an SSD drive from Amazon, or some electronic parts on clearance, or even the deal of the day from woot.com (not the same since they sold out to amazon). Anyhow, if its a deal you should know about I’ll post it!

This is my first experience with WordPress and I will be working on figuring out all the ins and outs. I still have some work to do to make the site look even better, but I really just wanted to get posting.

If you have read this, thank you! Its appreciated. If you have some ideas for content or new posts, please feel free to send them my way ideas@webcommand.net

Until next time, have a great day

-Joe
