I also have an extensive home &#8220;production&#8221; lab so I can stay up to date on changes in tech and its fun! Recently I installed Exchange 2016 in a Hyper-V virtual machine. It was a simple migration from 2013. I was in the process of decommissioning an older Hyper-V host. Some of my guest vm&#8217;s were migrated while others were built from scratch.<\/p>\n<p>I had\u00a0 completed my migration and Exchange, OWA, &amp; ECP were working just fine. About a month later I tried to access the ECP and was greeted with a 500 Error!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webcommand.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/exchange-2013-500-error.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1516 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webcommand.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/exchange-2013-500-error.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"829\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.webcommand.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/exchange-2013-500-error.png 829w, https:\/\/www.webcommand.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/exchange-2013-500-error-150x52.png 150w, https:\/\/www.webcommand.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/exchange-2013-500-error-300x104.png 300w, https:\/\/www.webcommand.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/exchange-2013-500-error-768x267.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5>Tracking Down The Error<\/h5>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I started to troubleshoot the issue, reboot, look at exchange setting. The exchange shell was working fine, and all other items were working too. Just ECP was down.<\/p>\n<p>Next stop the event viewer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webcommand.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/7-26-2018-9-21-45-AM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1517 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webcommand.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/7-26-2018-9-21-45-AM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.webcommand.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/7-26-2018-9-21-45-AM.jpg 545w, https:\/\/www.webcommand.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/7-26-2018-9-21-45-AM-150x43.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.webcommand.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/7-26-2018-9-21-45-AM-300x86.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the event that was appearing in my logs over and over again<\/p>\n<p>Details:<\/p>\n<pre>Current user: 'joeoliveri.com\/Microsoft Exchange System Objects\/Monitoring Mailboxes\/HealthMailbox3b4ab888c6d14cdaa15d6d07e800f9d4'\r\nRequest for URL 'https:\/\/localhost:444\/ecp\/About.aspx' failed with the following error:\r\nSystem.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: Host 'mail.joeoliveri.com' is not allowed to connect \r\nto this MySQL server (C:\\Windows\\Microsoft.NET\\Framework64\\v4.0.30319\\Config\\machine.config line 275) \r\n---&gt; MySql.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlException: \r\nHost 'Mail.joeoliveri.com' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server<\/pre>\n<p>What? MySql? Why does Exchange Server 2016 care about MySql?<\/p>\n<h5>How to fix EXCHANGE Error 500 ECP &amp; MySql<\/h5>\n<p>As it turns out I am also running a MySql Server on my Exchange server (yes I know.. why..) its a home lab and sometimes I place things where I have room or where its convenient. In this case I have an IIS based project that is able to share the same IIS instance .<\/p>\n<p>When MySql \/ PHP was installed apparently it made a modification to the machine.config file causing Exchange to attempt to hook into MySql. Reveting back to the backup machine.config file &#8211; know as machine.config.default should correct the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Location of machine.config:(backup file is in the same folder)<\/p>\n<div class=\"answercell post-layout--right\">\n<div class=\"post-text\">\n<p><strong>32-bit<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre class=\"default prettyprint prettyprinted\"><code><span class=\"pun\">%<\/span><span class=\"pln\">windir<\/span><span class=\"pun\">%<\/span><span class=\"pln\">\\Microsoft<\/span><span class=\"pun\">.<\/span><span class=\"pln\">NET\\Framework\\[version<\/span><span class=\"pun\">]<\/span><span class=\"pln\">\\config\\machine<\/span><span class=\"pun\">.<\/span><span class=\"pln\">config<\/span><\/code><\/pre>\n<p><strong>64-bit<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre class=\"default prettyprint prettyprinted\"><code><span class=\"pun\">%<\/span><span class=\"pln\">windir<\/span><span class=\"pun\">%<\/span><span class=\"pln\">\\Microsoft<\/span><span class=\"pun\">.<\/span><span class=\"pln\">NET\\Framework64\\[version<\/span><span class=\"pun\">]<\/span><span class=\"pln\">\\config\\machine<\/span><span class=\"pun\">.<\/span><span class=\"pln\">config <\/span><\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>On my actual Exchange server the path was:<\/p>\n<pre>C:\\Windows\\Microsoft.NET\\Framework64\\v4.0.30319\\Config<\/pre>\n<p>Locate the backup file in the above folder &#8220;machine.config.default&#8221; make a copy of that file (backup of the backup)<\/p>\n<p>Rename the live file &#8211; machine.config to machine.config.bad<br \/>\nRename the backup &#8211; machine.config.default to machine.config<\/p>\n<p>finally fire off a IISRESET command from an administrative command prompt and BAM.. all should be working properly<\/p>\n<p>Your other option could be to edit the existing live file and delete all the references to MySql.<\/p>\n<p>As always it is a good idea to have a current backup of your exchange server before you start messing with configuration files.<\/p>\n<p>I hope this post was able to save someone a bit of time troubleshooting the dreaded ERROR 500.<\/p>\n<p>As always, thank you for reading my blog.<br \/>\n-Joe<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget to visit my Etsy store &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geekgearstore.com\">www.geekgearstore.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As an IT professional for over 20 years I have run into a lot of strange errors in my time.
